He’s been one of the most successful “mass marketing” masters since he struck out on his own in the year 2000.

Here’s a prime specimen from what could be the last vestige of print advertising.
And please, it’s cosmetic jewelry!
This is a PURE offer backed up by scintillating and concise copy and, of course, great pictures.

In May of 2018, I gave a presentation to Perry Marshall’s peeps.
Up until a few days before the webinar, I was stuck.
What could I talk about that would be RELEVANT, but almost unknown to most?
Ah, AdWords On Paper!
Yes, I know it’s not 2005 anymore and Perry’s gone waaaay beyond Adwords, as Evolution 2.0 makes plain. Yet, I miss those bygone days when you could pick up the phone and ping Perry on his mobile.

Here’s a great example of the “take this test” copy involvement device.
And it worked like a charm in this promo for the dietary supplement for better sleep, fittingly named Sleep Dissolves.
It commences with an enargia setup.
✓ It’s 2:40 am, and the clock is your enemy.
✓ You just can’t fall asleep. You’ve tossed and turned all night and wake up before dawn — way too early.
✓ You get out of bed and have to drag yourself through the day. [Read more…]

Here’s a BREAKTHROUGH ad that’s had over 4,000 insertions since August of 2020… and CONTINUES its domination in print a year later.
The supplements market in newspaper print is a mere shell of what it was in mid-2019 because of the collapse in newsstand sales.
Only the strongest advertisers have survived, while marginal ones have had to pack it in. [Read more…]

As Rosser Reeves noted: “A gifted product is mightier than a gifted pen.”
This evergreen book is a textbook example of that quote.
Over thirty years later Getting Straight A’s is still touted by students and parents alike.
This ad had THOUSANDS of print insertions from 1986 till 2000. [Read more…]

Who’s my favorite “tag team” in direct response?
If you twisted my arm, I’d have to go with Clayton Makepeace and Martin Weiss.
Clayton is forever enshrined in the pantheon of direct response legends and his long time client, Martin Weiss, was the king of financial newsletters. The Safe Money Report is surely on the short list of the greatest newsletter titles of all time. [Read more…]

It’s the tried and true “tiny pill” response booster.
It was a HUGE headline in print between 2010 and 2014.
Currently, it’s hibernating. [Read more…]

This fake (faux, please, it’s gentler!) issue mailing continues to be a winner for Bottom Line Health.
It resembles a Bottom Line Health issue, yet its job is to SELL the prospect on responding to the perennially WINING offer of 3 FREE issues.
My latest receipt of this control is in November of 2021 and it has been mailing since 2020, if my records are accurate. These days, I’m never certain. [Read more…]

You don’t build a newsletter that lasts for over a half-century without taking a STRONG position.
So if you want to avoid the bumps and bruises that may come with the newsletter business, there are plenty of other markets and products to choose from: anti-aging serums, foreign language courses and weight loss supplements to name a few. [Read more…]

Here’s a long time control from the mighty Nutri-Health, before the company was acquired in the mid 2010s.
It’s no coincidence that the supplement sellers with the strongest copy have had some of the biggest paydays, take Health Resources for example.
This evergreen supplements promo could likely run today without changing a stitch of copy. [Read more…]

Here’s one of the epic Moneysworth ads that appeared in the thousands back in the 1970s.
The copy also ran into the thousands of words with double page spreads, via the flowing ink from the prolific pen of Ralph Ginzburg’s wife, Shoshana Ginzburg.
If my aging memory serves, Gary Bencivenga used this headline as an example for his “Yeah, right!” smell test. Basically, read a headline or an advertising claim aloud and immediately follow it up with a sarcastic New Yorkese… “Yeah, right!” and listen if the claim is believable. [Read more…]

This blockbuster lead from Clayton Makepeace is likely responsible for untold tens of millions in supplement sales because it’s been knocked off so far and wide.
A longtime subscriber offered me a small fortune not long ago to track down the original magalog from 2005… and I just happened to find a pristine mailing in the archive I’ve been slowly unpacking after a big move up to Phoenix.
There’s no way to excel upon the breakdown of this piece than what the mail order selling master himself wrote about it. [Read more…]

This may not be a high ticket offer, but it boasts a strong PRESTIGE appeal in the mold of the Bonner Private Portfolio.

I’ve gotten around a bit in the direct response world.
I had two great phone conversations with Boardroom founder and marketing legend, Marty Edelston, after I sent him this ad collection.
His passion for direct response was still red hot in 2008, even after being “on top” for decades. [Read more…]

This is nearly 250 pages of the “secret” direct mail legend, Thomas L. Hall’s reports and sales letters.
There were many direct mail marketers, including Gary Halbert, who learned the ropes about direct mail marketing from his Direct Mail Guides.
Hall began marketing in the early 1960s in print and direct mail and this is one of his early insertions from 1961.
The winning appeal was constant for Hall: earn up to one thousand dollars a day from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
Here’s one of the many comments I’ve gotten from his Inner Circle members over the years — this one from 2009. [Read more…]

There’s no anonymity or “playing it safe” as a newsletter publisher.
Unlike the pills and potions in the world of health and beauty, but without the massive markets, the newsletter business obligates the publisher to “put it all on the table,” ergo, you can always count on long copy.
This 26-page promo also offers a look into textbook customer ascension offers, something not enough marketeers pay heed to… I know of one busily typing right now. 🙂 [Read more…]

This visually impressive magalog for “Ocuten” has a great lead, strong copy, packed proof elements and a hard hitting offer.
Fear plays no minor role in the copy. [Read more…]

Here’s a 2021 spin on a mature market familiar to all of us in direct response — the copywriting game.
With the draconian public health restrictions (at last!) beginning to recede (at least in many parts of the States) it’s time to get back to in person seminars, though this one is virtual in addition.
This promo for “The Ultimate Sales Letter & Ultimate Marketing Plan Mid-Year Event” mailing to past customers in June 0f 2021. It employs the “official direct mail” approach and is replete with the threatening envelope teaser copy: “Forgery of endorsements on checks is a Federal crime. Maximum penalty is a $10,000 fine and ten-year imprisonment.” [Read more…]
